We use pressure-treated pine or composite decking depending on your budget and how much upkeep you want to do later. Footings get sized for the clay soil out here, not a generic span table, because clay swells and shrinks with the rain and a shallow footing will heave. We space the boards to let water drain instead of pool, which is half the reason decks rot in the first place. That attention up front is what keeps a deck from needing major repair five years in.

Had some soft boards near the stairs, figured it was just the top layer. Turned out the joist underneath was rotted too, glad they caught it before covering it back up.
Our deck out in Mission was looking pretty gray after a few summers. They pressure washed it, let it dry two days before staining, and it looks like wood again instead of driftwood.
Went with composite so I wouldn't be restaining every year. Took longer than quoted since they found a footing issue mid-project, but they told me upfront instead of just adding it to the bill.
